Veer Savarkar Death
Veer Savarkar, the prominent freedom fighter and nationalist, passed away on 26 February 1966 at his residence in Bombay (now Mumbai). Prior to his death, Savarkar renounced food, water, and medicine as a conscious decision to end his life, which he termed as “atmaarpan” or fasting until death. He believed that when one’s life mission is fulfilled and the ability to serve society diminishes, it is better to choose voluntary death rather than waiting for natural death. Savarkar’s health deteriorated rapidly, and despite efforts to revive him, he was declared dead at 11:10 a.m. His funeral took place the following day at an electric crematorium, with his son Vishwas performing the last rites. However, his death did not receive official mourning from the Congress party government of Maharashtra or the central government, reflecting the political indifference towards Savarkar, which persisted even after his demise.
